Forfeiting Your Soul
I lived to compete, not only in sports, but in everything. Life was all about winning trophies, accolades and awards - there was nothing else. My drive, passion and disciplined lifestyle allowed me to push myself every day to new limits – but at what cost?
No sooner had I finished one competition I would be preparing for the next – it was like a never-ending merry go round that never stopped. And when I did stop, which only happened when I was injured – and laid up in hospital - did I have this uneasy feeling that life didn’t really make sense. As the years went by and the merry go round carried on at full speed, I was beginning to realise that winning and achieving everything I had ever wanted did not fulfil my dream of finding meaning and purpose.
How did I find the answer? It was only when everything I treasured got removed from my life did, I come face to face with the truth. Sometimes in life we are given opportunities to reassess where we are going in life. For me the opportunity came when I felt like I had fallen down a bottomless pit. Opportunities to find the right way in life don’t always come in the shape of fluffy little bunny rabbits, rainbows and flowers but normally appear when things don’t go as planned. Or should I say when things don’t go our way!
I could have stayed on the merry go round and obtained more and more trophies, but I knew there could be so much more in my life. God tells us “For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world (wealth, fame, success) but forfeits his soul.”
When darkness and an emptiness overtake don’t give up - call out to God and see how he answers – you may be surprised!!! Light does come out of darkness.
