I collapsed exhausted onto my bed, I had no more tears - I could cry no longer. My eyes were swollen and my head hurt, after days of continual praying I could pray no more, I couldn’t think and I didn’t want to think; I felt numb. I hadn’t slept for three nights and I was exhausted. I sat perched on the edge of the bed, how nice would it be to roll over and go to sleep and then wake up to find this was all just one horrid dream………
There is a saying in the sporting world that states ‘An athlete dies twice,’ once when he retires and again at the end of life. When I fell at 160kph in a speed skiing race I was blessed not to die but on the inside I did. My identity was stripped away, and I felt like I had lost part of who I was. My world up until the near fatal crash had been totally dedicated to skiing. My shattered right leg was now metal; and with twelve months of rehabilitation my sporting career was in ruins. Emotionally I was wrecked– who was I? I had no idea!
What could be better than to worship outdoors under the heavens. Gathering under our pecan tree on the farm has ignited in me a new awareness of nature and how God communicates through His creation. We’ve seen flocks of birds circling the pecan, we’ve had two wedge-tail eagles join us and we’ve seen birds we’ve never seen before. It gives us an overwhelming sense of God’s presence – why?
I have been interviewing some amazing people over the last couple of weeks, people that have motivated me and inspired me on my journey. I thought we'd go one step deeper and in a very quirky way and introduce and interview someone who has probably been one of the most.. actually the second most important person in my life - my husband Jeffrey Rossely!
It's so good to meet people that hugely inspire you - Lisa Kristine is one of those people. She's such an encourager, challenger and inspirer of people, and a world-class humanitarian photographer.
If you want to learn how to think outside of the box, if you want to have a totally different perspective on how to grow your business' core strategies or understand it's real values, this is for you!
It’s very easy to cruise through life and not let God into the details. I suppose we sometimes wrongly think that God is only interested in the bigger more ‘important’ stuff – but nope, he loves getting involved and being here for us in everything – including how to relocate four rebellious naughty cows!
Since launching my book Racing on Empty earlier this year, i've had a few people ask about who Sozo Foundation are, that the profit from my book go to support and I thought the best way to explain was to introduce you to one of those incredible people I was talking about earlier - Anton Cuyler, CEO of The Sozo Foundation.
Never give up on anything that looks broken. We all come into the world broken but God never gives up on us – if we let Him he can mold and shape us – in this process we see hope, peace and love.
Every day is a gift from God. How many times have we heard this and agreed and carried on with our lives? Having the mentality of living every day as if it’s your last gives you a totally different perspective on life.
I have been asked on numerous occasions why all the royalties of my autobiography ‘Racing on Empty’ go to the Sozo Foundation – it’s a simple answer!
When I was approached to work with Rothmans Williams Renault Formula One Team (Middle East) on the public relations in 1994 it was a dream come true. I had five months to learn all about the drivers Ayrton Senna and Damon Hill and the ins and outs of Formula One.
I lived to compete not only in sports but in everything. Life was all about winning trophies, accolades and awards- there was nothing else. My drive, passion and disciplined lifestyle allowed me to push myself every day to new limits – but at what cost?
Life sometimes can feel like a roller coaster ride. For many of us it’s hard to stay off the ride because we feel it’s the only way of moving forward and getting things done. But right now, today that roller coaster ride for many of us has been taken away. Our normal activities and busy nonstop lifestyle have come to an abrupt halt because of the Covid 19 virus.
I was born the eldest of four girls into a strict religious family. Believe it or not I was painfully shy – so much so that if you spoke to me I would turn beetroot red and I also stuttered badly.
What we focus on during our day plays a big role in our walk with the Lord – for many of us we will tend to concentrate on what’s visible, but the Bible tells us that we must set our minds on things we cannot see. Colossians 3:2 “Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth.” So why and how should we focus on the unseen?
Life is made up of different seasons and now I’m in one of those quiet ones again. I remember in 2015 when I wrote the following article on how my world turned upside down in just a couple of weeks – I went from doing nothing too jumping on a roller coaster.
It always amazes me how we all run around each day as if we were going to live forever – when the only true reality is that death can come at any time.
RACING ON EMPTY
Iona lives to compete. She represented Great Britain in speed skiing and rode on the Irish Equestrian Team. Driven by a desire to find herself, a rebellious and slightly wild Iona harnessed her sporting abilities to find purpose, hope and meaning.
Iona travels to London with her husband Jeff to visit friends and for Iona to appear on BBC1’s Sunday Morning Live on the 12th of March 2023.
